Diploma Policy

Degrees will be conferred on candidates who have demonstrated the following: the acquisition of a high level of specialist knowledge in their chosen specialty together with an international outlook; the desire to contribute to the advancement of medicine and medical treatment through a high ethical sense and ability to think ethically; the ability to independently forge new paths in medical science.

For a degree to be conferred, the candidate will be expected to meet the requirements listed below:
The student will be required to spend the period stipulated for graduate school students at this university; attend lectures and obtain the required number of credits; sit a final examination, undergo a review of their doctoral dissertation, and meet with the approval of the graduate school educational committee. Furthermore, the following items will be evaluated in the final examination:

    1. The ability to explain logically the background, objectives, and significance of their research.
    2. Adequate knowledge of both established and cutting-edge progress both domestically and abroad in their chosen field.
    3. An understanding of and the ability to explain the methodology and appropriateness of their research.
    4. The ability to interpret logically, discuss, and summarize the results of their research.
    5. The ability to independently devise and execute an ethically sound research plan.
    6. The ability to discuss logically and field questions.

Furthermore, the doctoral candidate will be expected to write and publish their dissertation as the first author and submit it for evaluation. Moreover, this paper must be written in English.

Curriculum Policy

The candidate will be expected to follow both a specialist and a general curriculum comprising a series of special graduate school lectures and course work. This curriculum has been devised to endow the candidate with the ability to take responsibility for their own research work while acquiring the skills laid down in the diploma policy.

    1. The candidate will decide their research topic in consultation with their advisor as laid down in the specialist curriculum. They will be expected to acquire the necessary cutting-edge knowledge and skills required by their chosen field and topic of research. The curriculum will endow them with a sound ethical and scientific outlook through daily discussion, attendance at domestic and international conferences, and participation in research groups.
    2. Under the general curriculum, the candidate will learn how to undertake research. This will include learning the following: the essentials of medicine; research ethics; biostatistics; English presentation skills; how to write a paper in English; and how to apply for a grant.
    3. Course work falls under the following 6 categories: nervous system; biodefense system; tumor system; organ function analysis system; molecular/cell function system; and social/information/education system. The candidate will select the appropriate system for their chosen research topic. They will thus acquire the necessary research methodologies and skills where this may lay outside those of their research department. They will be expected to take part in course work research presentation meetings, which are held twice a year. In principle, first-year students will present on the objective, background to, and methodology of their research topic. Second- and third-year students will give an interim report on how this work is progressing. Fourth-year students will give a poster presentation on their work in English at the Tokyo Medical University Academic Conference.
    4. The candidate will acquire a wide viewpoint, and general scientific outlook and approach to their work that surpasses any particular field through attending a series of lectures on cutting-edge medicine and medical treatment.
    5. The candidate will acquire a scientific and ethically sound outlook by listening to and debating the work of other candidates and researchers. This will be done in conjunction with presenting their own work at the Tokyo Medical University Academic Conference held twice a year, at other domestic and international conferences and in research groups. They will be required to give a poster presentation in English at the Tokyo Medical University Academic Conference with the aim of improving their overall English presentation skills.

    3. Those with a strong commitment to the next generation of medicine and medical treatment; and the ability to actively pursue learning.
    4. Those with the necessary skills to gather information on medical science; to analyze; and to communicate.
    5. Those with a scientific mindset and the ability to evaluate impartially.
