In May, 1916, more than 400 students of the
Nihon Medical Technical School resigned en

in order to form a new institution. Overcoming
great tribulations, the student body showed
very firm solidarity and was fortunate enough
to receive the help and under standing of
Takuya Takahashi, among other s, and in September
of the same year the Tokyo Medical Studies
Institute was formed and in April, 1918,
the precursor of Tokyo Medical University
Tokyo Medical Technical School was established.
The founder was Takuya Takahashi and the
president of the school was Tatsujiro Sato.
Dr . Takahashi was born in Hiroshima Prefecture
and had ended his long career as a government
official as governor of Okinawa. At the time
he was a member of SeiyuKai. He devoted his
entire assets to the support of the student
group and gathered support from around the
entire country, exhibiting superhuman zealous
toward the founding of the college. The policy
of Tokyo Medical University, self-motivation,
self-study has continued as a large supporting
institution ever since then.
Self-motivation, self-study
The policy of self-motivation, self study,
which is the spirit of the establishment
of Tokyo Medical University means that the
students must have an environment in which
they can develop independently. The essence
of this philosophy means that the students
have to bring alive an educational system
in which individual creativity is emphasized.
This philosophy is also the backbone of the
future development of Tokyo Medical University.
