The Tokyo Medical University Kasumigaura Hospital is located close to the academic town of Tsukuba. Ever since it opened in 1949, it has been making significant contributions to local health care, and in 1996 it was officially designated as an AIDS Treatment Center Hospital. In April of 1998, the new wing was completed, and with it a facility dedicated to infectious diseases. In addition to playing a role in clinical education, there is a research wing, diagnostic division, administration building and student dormitories.
