Greetings from the head investigator

We are pleased to announce that a new research project “Production, function and structure of neo-self” has just launched starting from this summer (FY2016-2020). My name is Mitsuru Matsumoto from Institute for Enzyme Research, Tokushima University. First of all, I would like to appreciate all the people who had contributed to the start of this project.

Our aim of this research project is to elucidate the pathogenesis of autoimmune disease and allergic reaction from a novel viewpoint and concept of “neo-self”. We are also hoping that this novel concept of “neo-self” might help us to develop novel approaches toward a cancer immunotherapy. Then, most obvious and immediate question would be what the “neo-self” is.

Recent studies of our research members have suggested that there might be a novel mode of antigen presentation by major histocompatibility complex (MHC). The studies have suggested that this previously unrecognized mode of antigen presentation is playing an important role in the immune reactions. Indeed, we recently found that an abnormality in such an antigen presentation pathway could become a cause of some types of autoimmune disease. With this novel concept, we are also hoping that we might be able to solve a longstanding question of the relationship between particular types of MHC and susceptibility to many autoimmune diseases and/or allergic reactions.

We are expecting that many researchers, even outside the immunology field, would join us in order to successfully accomplish this research project. Your great understanding and support for our research project is highly appreciated. Now, let’s work together to achieve a sustainable science in this fascinating research field!

Sincerely yours,
Mituru Matumoto
